Matt's sister is due to give birth any day (actually, she was due to give birth nearly two weeks ago, but apparently late delivery is very common in first pregnancies) so I feel I can finally reveal the answer to my other mysterious UFO conundrum. It was not a legless elephant, Loz, or a cozy for an iron, Inkwolf. It was in fact one of these little beauties:

I got slightly carried away with knitting these. It was possible to knit one in one day, you see, and the joy of seeing a nearly-completed thing so excited me that I couldn't stop myself from knitting more

and more.

What I hadn't reckoned on was how long it'd take to sew the dratted things together. And then, once they were all sewn up, they didn't really look like anything. I briefly considered knitting little straps to go across the top, with pretty buttons to fasten them. But that plan died the death due to being far too fiddly. Enter the wonderful old blanket stitch (possibly the first decorative stitch I ever learnt to do. I can remember being completely entertained as a child by just sewing blanket stitch around the edges of handkerchiefs):

So pretty! I almost wish they were for me, but they're much too small:

According to the pattern they're supposed to fit babies from 3-6 months, but they look a little large for that. I expect the baby will grow into them eventually...

Outside: Sunny day! A tour of my chicken-keeping friend's new vegetable patch, followed by a tour of mum's garden, and badminton on the grass by the sea with Matt.
Inside: Courgette, lentil and cumin soup, with home-made bread and smoked cheese.
Reading: The Grey King by Susan Cooper
Piano: More Bach (it's an addiction), and accompanying lots of songs at a small concert in the afternoon.

It is apparently impossible not to get clucky when confronted with baby shoes. Even I succumbed.

There have been times when I've seriously wanted to have a baby just so I could justify a baby shoe collection. The concern about little details like signing up to take a back seat in your own life for at least a decade, reclaiming it slowly over the next one, to some degree, assuming you only have the one, and can deal with the questions about making it a little brother or sister before the gap's too big for them to be friends with a straight-faced "no, we wanted it to be an only child, so it could be poorly socialised and spoilt." has so far always been stronger than the broodies, so far.

The broodies, as far as I can tell, reach a peak in your early thirties. I really wanted a baby when I was 31-32. It's not as strong now -- more a kind of panic that I'm running out of time if I want a baby, as opposed to the earlier "OMG babies are so cute and I want one too!" that I briefly felt (literally just for that one year).

Since I was about 12, it's been a "definitely at some point. Not within the next decade though - BIG responsibility!" sort of thing ;-) I guess when my implant thingy comes out in 2 years, I can find out how painful that is and decide how many more of them I'm prepared to put up with (deciding to come off contraceptives, maybe, in 5 years, still seems too soon! Eight... Might work)... ;-) (I feel more broody when I see babies and toddlers being cute and smiley. I feel less broody when I'm with my family - bear in mind that Dani is 16 now!)

It is a big decision, and the change in attitude needed to go from "contraception matters and is a must" to "substitute the pill for Folic acid" is quite a large one!

So cute! Well-knitted! I'm sure your iron is very disappointed.
